This week’s Constromart Knowledge & Experience Seminar Vol. 6 No. 5 featured a presentation by our guest speaker, Nii Noi Kofi Omaboe on the topic, Transforming Urban Mobility: Enhancing Transportation Systems in Ghana. The session delved into the current challenges, opportunities, and strategies for improving transportation infrastructure, particularly in urban areas like Accra, which face congestion and inefficiencies due to rapid population growth.
The discussion outlined critical urban mobility challenges, including inadequate public transport systems, limited infrastructure for non-motorized transport, and the environmental consequences of transportation-related greenhouse gas emissions. Sustainable and accessible solutions were highlighted as essential to overcoming these issues, drawing on global examples such as Singapore’s integrated public transport system and London’s cycling network, which offer valuable models for adaptation.
Economic and social benefits of improved urban transportation were a key focus, emphasizing how enhanced systems could ease commuting, alleviate traffic congestion, and spur economic growth by promoting regional development beyond major cities like Accra. The integration of technology, such as smart traffic management tools, and public-private partnerships were presented as critical elements in implementing these improvements.
Policy recommendations centered on privatizing certain aspects of the mass public transit system to enhance efficiency and reduce government burdens. Investments in cycling infrastructure and policies promoting non-motorized transport were emphasized to create safer spaces for pedestrians and cyclists. Strong leadership and local venture capital were also identified as essential for driving long-term urban mobility projects.
The session underscored the transformative potential of effective transportation systems in fostering economic growth, enhancing quality of life, and advancing sustainable development in Ghana. It emphasized the need for innovative systems, strategic policymaking, and long-term investment to address the pressing challenges posed by urbanization.
