The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Optimizing Infrastructure Design and Construction with Eng. Samuel Gathukia

In a recent session of our Knowledge and Experience series Vol.4 No.8, Eng. Samuel Gathukia delivered a compelling presentation on “The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Optimizing Infrastructure Design and Construction.” The session explored significant technological advancements in project management facilitated by AI and highlighted the crucial importance of data quality in AI applications for sustainable infrastructure.

Eng. Gathukia emphasized the importance of understanding AI’s capability to not only process data but also predict outcomes and learn from accumulated information. He underscored the critical need to enhance project performance, noting that despite the proficiency of designers, actual project outcomes often fall short of expectations. He added that key performance metrics such as time, budget, and quality, introduced customer satisfaction are crucial factors due to their significant impact on project disputes, which can lead to cost overruns, rework, and schedule delays.  

Furthermore, Eng. Gathukia explored the capabilities of AI, distinguishing between narrow AI, general AI, and super AI. Narrow AI focuses on specific fields such as civil or electrical engineering, while general AI integrates knowledge from multiple engineering disciplines to provide comprehensive insights. He stated that super AI, aims to synthesize vast amounts of information across various fields, leading to unprecedented advancements.

The significance of data quality and governance in AI was also emphasized by our speaker. He underscored that using incorrect or incomplete data can lead to flawed outcomes. He further stressed the importance of data validity and consistency, noting that even minor omissions, like missing sections in a 100-kilometer road capture, can significantly impair AI’s effectiveness.

In addition, Eng. Gathukia introduced a cutting-edge tool developed by OpenSpace, a 360° video job site capture and mapping. He mentioned that this innovative technology can used throughout the entire construction process, from pre-construction to operations. He demonstrated how this tool enables real-time, date- and time-stamped documentation of site conditions, providing a comprehensive view that significantly enhances project management. This approach exemplifies the transformative impact of AI and related technologies on improving project monitoring and performance, ensuring that all stakeholders remain aligned and well-informed throughout the project lifecycle.

In conclusion, the session aimed to deepen understanding of AI’s evolving role in reshaping infrastructure development, equipping participants with practical insights to harness these technologies effectively in their respective projects and industries.
