Constromart Knowledge and Experience Seminars Vol. 2 No. 2, October 9, 2023
During our recent Knowledge and Experience Seminar, Vol. 2 No. 2, we held a thought-provoking discussion on the role of young African professionals in contributing to future infrastructure and achieving the Global Development Goals. The webinar brought together professionals from Uganda, Nigeria, and Ghana, who shared their invaluable insights on incorporating sustainability concepts into infrastructure development.
The panellists took turns sharing their personal experiences working on projects with sustainability components. They emphasized the importance of strategies such as recycling, using local materials, and adopting designs that minimize negative social and environmental impact. The group also tackled the challenges that the infrastructure sector faces and offered recommendations for improving construction methods and investing in research and development of new materials and technologies.
One of the key focal points of the discussion was Africa’s readiness to adapt to and achieve net-zero emissions to combat climate change. Considering the current developmental state and challenges across the continent, the panellists expressed doubts about Africa’s preparedness. Nevertheless, there was optimism about increasing efforts to reduce inequalities. The panellists stressed the significance of acting and educating others about sustainability, beginning with small steps in households and communities.
The panel also explored various avenues for young African professionals to amplify their voices in decision-making processes. Suggestions included engaging in advocacy, participating in capacity-building programs, initiating community development projects, and fostering collaboration. The panellists also encouraged active involvement in local professional institutions and continental and international forums to influence policy decisions that support sustainable development.
As Africa’s future unfolds, the contributions of its young professionals will play a pivotal role in shaping the continent’s infrastructure and advancing the Global Development Goals. The webinar served as a crucial platform for discussing strategies and inspiring action among African young professionals, fostering collaboration to ensure a prosperous and sustainable future.
