Insights on Green Building Certification and Compliance in Infrastructure Development by Mr. Paul Ocran

In the latest edition of Constromart Weekly Knowledge & Experience series Vol.3 No.4, we had the pleasure of hosting Mr. Paul Ocran, a green building specialist at the IFC, World Bank Group. The session focused on the crucial role of green building certification systems in addressing climate change and the significance of building efficiency in reducing environmental impact.

Mr. Ocran expressed his strong support for green building certification systems, particularly IFC’s EDGe, emphasizing their role in combating climate change by improving building efficiency in areas such as energy consumption, water usage, and carbon footprint. He also highlighted the economic potential of these systems, especially in the context of the emerging trend of constructing net-zero buildings.

The discussion delved into the concept of green building certification, outlining the stringent criteria for achieving certification and the importance of third-party verification for certification integrity. Key considerations in designing efficient buildings, such as building orientation, climate responsiveness, and the use of natural daylight, were emphasized, along with the role of software tools in evaluating building designs and optimizing energy efficiency.

The session also shed light on the benefits of green building certification, including accelerated sales cycles, reduced operational costs, and enhanced brand visibility for certified buildings. Mr. Ocran also underscored the pivotal role of certification in attracting financing options and navigating regulatory compliance in a changing legislative landscape.

An intriguing highlight of the session was the introduction of the Edge financial system, a cutting-edge tool designed to facilitate environmentally friendly interventions in buildings. Mr. Ocran showcased its functionality in providing insights into intervention payback periods and its alignment with prevailing ESG frameworks.

In summary, the session provided invaluable insights into green building certification and compliance, aligning with Constromart Africa’s commitment to sustainable and innovative infrastructure development.
