This week’s Constromart Knowledge and Experience Vol. 4, No. 9 explored Africa’s Largest Floating Solar Power Project with Ing. Maximillian Kwarteng, an expert in the renewable energy sector. The session explored the project’s significance within Africa’s energy landscape, highlighting its potential benefits in terms of enhancing sustainability, ensuring energy security, and promoting environmental conservation.
Ing. Kwarteng introduced the concept of floating solar panels, highlighting their use on rivers and reservoirs to complement traditional ground-mounted solar projects effectively. He explained that Ghana initially explored ground-mounted solar and later expanded into floating solar PV technology.
Additionally, Ing. Kwarteng highlighted several key benefits of floating solar panels which include land conservation by utilising water bodies where there are land availability challenges. Another benefit is that the system reduces water evaporation from reservoirs, which is good for hydropower generation. Again, installations of solar panels on water bodies provide shade and habitats for aquatic life, promoting biodiversity and supporting fish populations during warmer periods.
The challenges associated with floating solar technology were also highlighted. Ing. Kwarteng mentioned that one major concern is the potential negative impact on underwater fauna growth. He added that ensuring the durability of electrical components exposed to water, requiring careful maintenance to prevent damage and electrical hazards is also a challenge.
In terms of regulations, Ing. Kwarteng pointed out the current absence of specific rules for floating solar projects in Africa. However, he noted that there are general policies that support solar PV development. Government initiatives, such as commercial agreements and power purchase agreements (PPAs), aim to encourage solar energy adoption among large consumers. These policies facilitate collaboration between developers, contractors, and energy buyers, promoting sustainable energy solutions across the continent.
Ing. Kwarteng expressed optimism about expanding floating solar technology across Africa, especially in Ghana and West Africa. Drawing parallels with initial doubts about air travel safety, he emphasized technological progress and experience in overcoming challenges. He emphasized that comprehensive studies of river dynamics are crucial to ensure stable floating solar installations, underscoring the need for careful planning and high-quality equipment to improve efficiency and safety.
