Our recent Knowledge and Experience series Vol. 3 Vol. 8 delved into sustainable urban drainage systems, which was presented by Dr. John Okedi, a distinguished expert from the University of Cape Town. Dr. Okedi’s presentation included the facet of environmental modeling, emphasizing the paramount importance of meticulous data collection for precise outcomes. In addition, he emphasized the holistic approach necessitated by factors like rainfall, surface flow, and land use data, a challenge amplified in Africa due to data scarcity.
Furthermore, Dr. Okedi shed light on the complexities of flood mitigation in Cape Town’s dynamic landscape. Through compelling case studies, attendees gained insights into some applications of Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDs) in the management of water resources amidst diverse urban settings. He focused on SUDs such as the rain gardens and permeable pavement, showcasing their role in flood control and enhancing water quality providing real-time analysis of the effectiveness of each technology and combination of the two systems.
Dr. Okedi also delved into the area of data collection methodologies and its associated challenges while advocating for leveraging satellite data to augment existing information and pinpoint optimal rain garden locations. Additionally, his emphasis on the pivotal role of soil type in infiltration and water management added depth to the discussion.
Furthermore, Dr. Okedi discussed the transformative potential of Internet of Things (IoT) technology in revolutionizing water sector data collection and modeling. While acknowledging hurdles such as battery life and sensor security, he championed solutions and underscored the significance of upskilling in critical domains like modeling and programming.
In conclusion, Dr. Okedi emphasized the urgent need for strengthened networks and collaborations across Africa, envisioning a future where collective efforts lead to tangible progress in sustainable urban infrastructure.
