In Vol. 4 No.7 of the K&E, we hosted a panel discussion with African professionals from Botswana, Zambia, Uganda, and Ghana to delve into “The African Approach in Achieving Sustainable Infrastructure.” The panelists, Kutlo Modie, Pauline Phiri, Joseph Timbe, and Jacqueline Sampah-Adjei, shared their insights on key topics such as renewable energy, public-private partnerships, green building, and community engagement aimed at advancing sustainable infrastructure development in Africa.
Kutlo emphasized the crucial role of community engagement in ensuring the long-term success of sustainable infrastructure projects. She highlighted the importance of involving local communities from project inception through to maintenance phases, stressing the value of their knowledge in developing effective and sustainable solutions. Kutlo also emphasized the necessity of continuous communication among government organizations, project developers, and communities to achieve tangible outcomes and ensure system sustainability. Drawing from her experience as a tailings engineer, she underscored the importance of sustained community involvement to address the significant impacts of extractive processes on local communities.
Pauline focused on the significance of public-private partnerships (PPPs) in driving sustainable infrastructure development in Africa, particularly in achieving SDG 17 on partnerships for goals. She elaborated on how PPPs can mitigate risks, enhance accountability, and improve financial performance in sustainable infrastructure projects. Pauline also discussed the role of the build-operate-transfer (BOT) model in ensuring the long-term viability and efficient service delivery of projects by allowing private entities to design, construct, operate, and transfer projects to governments.
Joseph explored the transformative impact of green building technologies on sustainable infrastructure, aligning with SDG 9 and SDG 11. He introduced the Structural Carbon Tool by the Institution of Structural Engineers in the UK, aimed at achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, and emphasized their broad applicability across engineering sectors. Joseph advocated for refining design practices, using local materials, and assessing embodied carbon to minimize environmental impact, particularly in high-impact sectors like cement and steel usage.
Jacqueline delved into the leveraging of renewable energy in African countries through innovative and locally tailored technologies to boost sustainable development. She highlighted the importance of capacity building among local professionals to effectively manage renewable energy projects and advocated for knowledge sharing from successful models such as Ethiopia’s waste-to-energy plants to enhance continent-wide electricity production. Jacqueline also emphasized the critical role of young professionals in driving environmental sustainability and modernizing infrastructure approaches.
In conclusion, the panelists stressed the importance of tailoring sustainability efforts to meet Africa’s unique needs. They acknowledged the significant infrastructure challenges across the continent and emphasized the necessity of addressing these while minimizing environmental impact through effective carbon emissions reduction strategies. The discussion also highlighted the pivotal role of adopting innovative technologies to propel sustainable development continent-wide, ensuring a resilient and prosperous future for all African nations.
