The final episode of Constromart’s Knowledge & Experience Series, Vol. 6 No. 6, featured our guest speaker, Professor Kobby Mensah from the University of Ghana Business School, Department of Marketing and Entrepreneurship, who delivered a compelling session on “Building Confidence and Assertiveness in Personal and Professional Settings.” The discussion offered practical insights and strategies aimed at empowering individuals to thrive and achieve their full potential.
Professor Mensah began by emphasizing the importance of self-awareness as the bedrock of confidence. He explained that understanding one’s strengths and limitations is crucial for personal development. Identifying gaps in knowledge and actively working to address them not only builds confidence but also sets the stage for assertiveness in decision-making and communication.
Drawing from personal experiences, he shared how taking on responsibilities such as leading a church music group or being a class representative played a significant role in his journey to becoming confident. These leadership roles provided him with opportunities to practice speaking and making decisions in front of others, skills that are integral to developing confidence.
The discussion also explored the idea that confidence and assertiveness are dynamic traits that evolve with time and experience. Professor Mensah underscored the importance of continuously seeking out challenges and learning opportunities to stay adaptable, warning against complacency in personal growth.
A significant part of the session focused on cultural influences on confidence and assertiveness. He pointed out how some cultural norms, such as discouraging children from participating in adult conversations, can limit the development of these traits. He highlighted the importance of navigating such barriers, especially in multicultural workplaces, to thrive in diverse environments.
Furthermore, for those who identify as introverts, Professor Mensah provided valuable strategies for building confidence and assertiveness. He dispelled the myth that introverts lack confidence, suggesting that introverts can succeed by learning to adapt their communication styles, speaking up when needed, and staying authentic to their personalities.
In summary, this insightful session concluded Volume 6 of the Knowledge & Experience Series with a message of empowerment and growth. By embracing self-awareness, stepping into responsibilities, and navigating cultural and personal barriers, individuals can build the confidence and assertiveness needed to excel in personal and professional life.
