Workplace safety and health are crucial aspects of any workplace, and the World Day for Safety and Health 2023 highlights the importance of creating a safe and healthy environment for all employees. A safe and healthy working environment is a fundamental principle and right at work, and employers must ensure that their workers are protected from job-related injuries and illnesses by identifying and eliminating potential hazards in the workplace.
In Ghana, the Occupational Safety and Health Act, 2020 (Act 1060) governs workplace safety and health by providing a legal framework for the management, prevention of accidents and diseases, and safeguarding employees from potential hazards in the workplace. The Act mandates employers to provide a safe working environment, including appropriate equipment, protective clothing, and training on hazardous materials. Companies must also form a health and safety committee to oversee workplace hazards and recommend improvements. Moreover, Ghana has ratified several international conventions on occupational safety and health, including the International Labour Organization’s Convention on Safety and Health in Construction, the Chemicals Convention, and the Occupational Health Services Convention. The country has also established the National Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Policy to guide the implementation of workplace safety and health measures, which aims to improve workers’ health and well-being and reduce the number of occupational accidents and diseases.
Although these measures have been put in place to ensure that employees are protected from potential hazards in the workplace, the construction industry in developing countries poses serious health risks and hazards to workers, users of construction facilities, and the public. These hazards range from biological, mechanical, psychological, physical, to chemical hazards, and measures to control these risks on construction sites in developing countries are unsatisfactory.
To realize the goal of a safe work environment, consulting firms play a pivotal role in designing safe work environments and auditing, monitoring, and advising on work processes in the construction industry. The construction industry is an essential source of jobs for unskilled and unemployed people and contributes significantly to economic growth. Therefore, the government and employers are required to work jointly to ensure effective measures are put in place to prevent and manage workplace accidents and diseases, which can harm workers and lead to financial loss for organizations. In conclusion, creating a safe and healthy working environment is crucial for every workplace, and employers must comply with the regulations and measures put in place to ensure that employees are protected from job-related injuries and illnesses. The construction industry in developing countries poses serious health risks to workers, but with the help of consulting firms and effective policies and programs, employers can make significant strides towards ensuring that they are providing a safe and secure work environment. It is clear that investing in occupational safety and health not only benefits the employees but also businesses as a whole, by reducing absenteeism and increasing worker productivity. As such, stakeholders in the construction industry must continue to prioritize and promote safe work practices and protocols to minimize the risk of injuries and fatalities. While there is still much work to be done, it is important to recognize the progress that has been made in recent years and to continue striving towards safer, healthier workplaces for all.
